Four aviation enthusiasts started the operation in 1997, and since then the number of aircraft and members has grown steadily. The operation is run by a board authorised by the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen), and the work is carried out on a voluntary basis by certified pilots and technicians, most of them with an Air Force background. The aim is for the aircraft, which are civil-registered, to be painted and equipped as they were when they flew in the Swedish Air Force.
The main purpose of Swedish Air Force Historic Flight (SwAFHF) is to preserve and fly aircraft types that have been operational in the Swedish Air Force.
The SwAFHF fleet consists primarily of aircraft designed and built by Saab. The following aircraft are currently operational: J 29 “Flygande Tunnan” (the Flying Barrel), J32B Lansen, J35J/SK35C Draken, AJS/SK37 Viggen, as well as SK60, SAAB-105 and SK50 Saab Safir. The fleet also includes the types J 34 Hawker Hunter, SK 16 Harvard, SK 61 Bulldog, B 17 and Cessna Citation TP 103.
The proud Swedish military aviation heritage is unique in the world and worth preserving. For decades, the Swedish aviation industry has supplied the Air Force with ultra-modern and potent combat aircraft. Sweden is one of few countries in the world that has had, and has, this capability.
The Swedish Air Force has always been at the forefront in terms of high technology and expertise. Quality has always been put before quantity. Field readiness and efficiency have been watchwords over the years.
The Swedish Air Force is of the highest international class and attracts admiration and attention around the world. SwAFHF believes that preserving and showcasing this proud aviation heritage paves the way for the Air Force and the aviation industry into the future.
